XX

XX means the panel has already been replaced.

kōkan

replacement

Somebody has already changed this panel. On bolt-on parts such as a bonnet, a door or a front wing this is routine and often good news, because a replaced panel is a straight one.

On a welded panel, particularly a quarter panel or a rear panel, XX means the car had a significant hit and somebody cut metal out and welded new metal in. The quality of that work is the whole question and the sheet cannot answer it.

Two XX marks at the same corner of the car, or an XX alongside an R grade, is an accident history. Read it that way even if nobody says the word.

What it should do to your bid

Bolt-on panel, no adjustment. Welded panel, get photographs of the seams and the boot floor before you bid at all.
