GC8

Subaru Impreza WRX STI, GC8

EJ20 turbo, 2.0 flat-four, all-wheel drive

Version I through Version VI, October 1993 to September 2000. The whole run is now legal to import, and the good ones have mostly gone.

Subaru revised the STI roughly every year, so the build month on the sheet places the car in a version and sets its value. There is no other reliable way to do it from paperwork.

01What to read first on a GC8 sheet

Version, from the build month

Version IV, V and VI differ in engine detail, brakes and interior. The date on the sheet is what places a car, not the seller's description.

Rust at the rear arches and strut tops

GC8s rust at the arches, the sills and the rear strut mounts. An S or C mark near the rear suspension is a stop-and-photograph mark.

Head gasket and engine notes

EJ20 head gasket history is not on the sheet, and any handwritten note about noise, smoke or coolant is therefore worth more than the grade.

Type R and Type RA variants

The lightweight variants are worth substantially more, and the sheet identifies the grade. Read it there.

Every mark named above is defined in the codes library, with what it costs to put right at US rates.

Be told when a GC8 matters

We write when the GC8 clears another month of the 25-year rule, when the yen moves more than 3% your way, and once when the free Decode opens. Nothing else.
